It is a disease with great potential to be transmitted. In general, it occurs during summer but recently, it has caused small and large-scale acute enteritis in winter.

Major symptoms

  • The symptoms start with severe abdominal pain along with rigor and fever.
  • The patient may suffer from bloody and mucoid diarrhea(about 10 times) and sometimes it causes bleeding.
  • It is easily transmitted.

Route of infection

  • It causes large-scale infection through ingestion of food handled by a person infected with Shigella or drinking contaminated water.
  • It can be transmitted by touching the doorknob of a restroom or a towel. (fetal to oral)
  • Secondary transmission to the members of a family is potentially great

Latent period

  • Latent period: 12 hours ~ 7 days (1 day ~ 3 days)

Preventive measures

  • It is important to wash hands thoroughly. Using a bar of soap, wash hands with hot water for more than 10 seconds:
    - Before cooking and eating
    - After defecating
    - After changing baby¡¯s diaper
    ¡Ø A towel can be easily contaminated so dry hands by using paper towel or an electronic dryer.
  • It is important to store and cook food safely.
    - To prevent the growth of germs, keep the food¡¯s temperature lower than 5 ¡É or more than 60 ¡É.
    - Cook raw foods well.
    - Wash fresh vegetables thoroughly.
    - Reheat a cold dish at a temperature more than 75 ¡É.
  • Drink boiled water.

  • - If you suffer from diarrhea or vomit, see a doctor in a near medical institution or Public Health Center. In the event of having a group food poisoning, report to the Public Health Center near in the district.
