The pathogenic coliform bacillus is known to cause biological transformation unlike the general colon bacillus living in the intestine of a healthy person. Even small amount of this bacterium can cause illness.

Major symptoms

  • It is a disease that causes enterohemorrhage by E. coli O-157. It involves the symptoms of food poisoning including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomachache and in some patients, it may lead to death owing to enterohemorrhage and hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Route of infection

  • It is caused by eating contaminated meat without cooking well (Fresh liver, medium cooked meat, hamburger, etc.) and using cookware (Knives, chopping boards, etc.).
  • It is caused by eating contaminated vegetable without cooking well
  • It is caused by secondary infection from contaminated water, feces of the patients.

Latent period

  • Latent period: 2 days ~ 8 days (3~4 days in average)

Preventive measures

  • Use the cookware that is used for the cook of fresh meat, such as knives, chopping boards, tableware, dish towels, and so on after sterilizing in boiling water.
  • Cook well for the fresh meat (Especially hamburger). (Cook under 75¡Éfor three minutes)
  • Boil the drinking water beside tap water.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before having a meal and after touching meat and going to stool.
  • Never eat seasoned raw beef, liver, omasum, and so on uncooked.
