It is an epidemic respiratory disease and prevalent in spring. It is also an acute feverish disease often happened to young children between 5~15 years old.

Major symptoms

  • After 1~2 days latent period, it result premonitory symptoms like fever, headache, muscle ache, and so on. Later, swelling and ache are developed by the invasion through salivary glands (Usually through the parotid gland).

Route of infection

  • Airborne infection by saliva or indirect/direct contact to a patient¡¯s saliva are the major route.

Latent period

  • Latent period: 2 days ~ 8 days (3~4 days in average)

Preventive measures

  • An infected child is advised to take a rest at home.
  • After the swelling of the saliva gland, the things contaminated by the patient¡¯s saliva or secretion from respiratory organs should be sterilized for 9~10 days.
  • Wash hands and feet and brush teeth right away after coming back home.
