Unlike cold, Influenza is transmitted rapidly. It is an acute respiratory disease with accompanying symptoms of sudden high fever and general weakness. For old person, some complications including pneumonia and myocarditis may occur.

Major symptoms

  • Physical symptoms: sudden fever more than 37.8 ¡É, headache, myalgia, and fatigue. Respiratory symptoms: cough, sore throat, and sputum.

Route of infection

  • It is transmitted by virus in the air through coughing or sneezing of a patient (airborne transmission)

Latent period

  • Latent period: 24 hours ~ 72 hours (The symptoms generally occur within 24 hours of infection.)
  • ¡Ø Prevailing period: From Oct. every year to Apr. next year

Preventive measures

  • Those who fall into the following category should be vaccinated (60~90% preventive effect):
  • - The aged more than 65 years old
  • - Patients with chronic disease who have great potential for complications in the event of disease infection (lung, kidney,and liver diseases, diabetes, etc.)
  • Try to maintain individual rules and avoid crowded areas during the flu season.
  • Flu patients should take a rest at home and try not to transmit the disease to others.
  •    ¢Ñ Preventive measures for the common cold
  • - Maintain physical strength and try not to get too exhausted.
  • - Wash hands and face thoroughly after coming back to your home.
  • - A very low environment temperature (cold weather) weakens a person¡¯s resistance against the common cold, thus, wear warm clothes when going out to protect the body against chilly weather.
